RAF Records
« on: Wednesday 04 April 18 15:02 BST (UK) »
A few years back whilst clearing my Grandmothers house after she passed away I found some old photos that intrigued me. One in particular I have found to be of my fathers uncle and it is a wartime portrait photo of him in his RAF uniform.

He passed away in the later forties a year after he was married and he was never really talked about, the surviving family didn't even know he was in the RAF.

I only have his name, Kenneth Hann and his DOB / DOD and the photo, not much to go on.

Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?

For anyone serving after 1920, any service records are still with the MOD. They are not available anywhere else.

To apply, see:
https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records

You'll need his death certificate, and there is a fee of £30.

I am not sure he died in Bristol but that is stated as the district on his death record.
He lived in Wells and if he died there that would be the district listed i have assumed.

The death must be recorded in the Registration District in which it occurred.
Which probably means that he died in one of the hospitals in Bristol.

Wells had it's own Registration District, until 1974.

Hi,

As the death index record mentioned by SmallTownGirl showed 'Hann, Kenneth R' there is this from the AIR78 records (Index to Airmen & Airwomen, 1918-1975) at the National Archives:

Hann: Kenneth Richard
Service No: 1037350
Militia
PSH

Link to the section that contains his details here: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C15624181

He is on image 118, right hand side, second from bottom using the NA's image viewer.

Unfortunately, I do not know what the letters PSH stand for/mean and am also unsure as regards the Militia meaning. These records are just slips of paper that give a very few details & are just an index.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

My father did his National Service in the RAF, and has a card in AIR78.

He is included under Militia because he was a member of the ATC ;D
As far as I can tell, that meant he had already achieved certain criteria?
And was therefore fast-tracked into the RAF?

My bold emphasis

My uncle also had Militia on his AIR78 record, I wondered what it meant. Now I know! Thanks.
