Researching Scottish Ancestor - Thomas Grear Ellis
« on: Wednesday 04 April 18 18:02 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Anyone know of a good site for accessing Scottish records?

I am trying to locate the origins of my G-G-G-Grandfather, I have our family tree pretty muchsorted up until him but he is proving to be pretty elusive. His name was Thomas Grear Ellis and I have put his Birth Date circa 1842, I put this down to the only piece of paper I have with any record of him which is his marriage certificate. On it he states he was born in Stirlingshire, Scotland. He emigrated to South Africa but I cannot say when, his wife Martha Moody's family origins are from Wiltshire in the UK, I am also not sure when they arrived in South Africa.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as FamilySearch and Ancestry.co.uk have proved fruitless.

Regards,
Craig

Sadly I have, Im starting to think he either lied on his marriage cert about birth place or real name ;)

Have hit a brick wall on this one.

There is an 1852 birth in Dunblane. That's the only Stirlingshire birth I can see.

Yes it is, unfortunately it is also the ONLY lead I have on him. I have everything on his wife Martha.

I cannot find Death records in SA of him nor birth records in Scotland, all the sites I search and can potentially pay to retrieve don't match any criteria of his.

I can offer you a possible candidate. Given the age gap between him & his wife, he may have shaved a few years off his age. There is a baptism 28 May 1837 for Thomas Ellis son of John Ellis & his wife Elizabeth Grier in New Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTL3-63X

At that time, New Kilpatrick was partly in Dunbartonshire and partly in Stirlingshire
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/DNB/NewKilpatrick.
1841 census has the family in Dunbartonshire, 1851 & 1861 in Stirlingshire, 1871 in Dunbartonshire. Thomas appears on the 1841 & 1851 at Drumclog, Dunbartonshire/Stirlingshire  he is a printfield worker in 1851. Haven't spotted him after that as yet.

If that is the correct family, this is his father's baptism at Redgorton in Perthshire

Thanks a Million Osprey,

I will take any leads I can right now and the fact that his mother was Grier and Thomas had a Daughter called Elizabeth Grear/Greer/Grier, I assume its an homage to his mother, so will definitely look into this.

Craig

In case that turns out to be the correct family, I'll give you the details from John's death cert as I'd checked it yesterday. He died 29 March 1873 aged 80, widower of Elizabeth Greer. He died at Woodland, Milngavie (pronounced Millguy) parish of New Kilpatrick, he had been a bleacher. Father noted as James Ellis, bleacher, deceased and mother Ann, maiden surname Dow. Death was registered by his son David.

Elizabeth died in 1863, aged 65, mother's maiden name given as Hamilton in in the index on SP so probably this baptism 12 Sep 1797 in Glasgow. Death cert should confirm names of parents.
