...He applied to be married in 1836, and this was granted...
I don't think it was approved
Mary Ann Cooper, 27, ship Buffalo
"Cooper stated on arrival that she was married and had three children"

M

Jan 1840  Certificate of Freedom  3 Jan 1840 in name of Ann COOPER per Buffalo 1833  #40/0028.  Convict no. 33/0467.

NB back when Lachlan Macquarie was NSW governor, he organised the admin system ... and as he was a Scotsman, it often followed the Scottish tradition of females retaining their own names rather than becoming known by their NSW married husbands' surnames.    So in the official records, just because the Convict Index retains the surname that was on the official records when a female convict arrives, she may have married at any time after her arrival and become known by her husband's name everywhere except in the official records.    Also, her sentence 'beyond the seas' effectively ends her UK marriage, and she as well as her UK husband actually becomes free to marry.    This has been discussed several times at RChat.   May I mention that the (18 July) 1823 UK marriage Act applies, but later ones DO NOT, unless they specifically nominate that they are effective in New South Wales (which was a much larger geographical area than it is today)

Charles SHATTLES, the young man who drowned, had been in Melbourne just before the dreadful voyage.

Ly-ee-Moon departed Melbourne on Sat. 29th May 1886.

The day before, 28th May he had married Ellen ELizabeth ROGERS.

Adding,
Perhaps they were heading home to the Hawkesbury together.
