With the GRO search, you can only search for a year +/- 2 years
GRO doesn't include marriages.
GRO Deaths include age at death for almost all deaths, 1837-1916.

With FreeBMD you can search for any number of years, and filter by county or counties.
You can also filter by Registration Districts.

Personally I use both!

FreeBMD to find a birth or a death, and then GRO to get any details.
Searching for births for a surname, with Mother's maiden name, and +/-  2 years can help to find siblings. Search again  5 years different to find another batch
