John Burden /Eliza Tunley or Eliza Henley
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 04:12 BST (UK) »
Need help.  John married an Eliza in the Dec quarter in Wareham 1844. There are two entries for this marriage. I am guessing one is not correct.  Would her death cert say what her maiden name was?
They were living in the Bloxworth area of Dorset. She was 84 when she died in 1902 making a birth year of 1818. I have looked at Dorset records but cannot seem to find anything for Tunley or Henley.
Perhaps the marriage cert would have info but which one do I choose?
Any help would be appreciated

Is this them in 1851

John Burden 30 ag lab Bloxworth, Dorset
Eliza Burden 29 Weymouth, Dorset,
Ann Burden 6 Bloxworth, Dorset
Jane Burden 2 Bloxworth, Dorset,
James Burden 4 Bloxworth, Dorset

If it is then on the GRO index of births the mother's maiden name for James, Jane and  Ann is FINLEY. Ann is registered as Elizabeth Ann

From the 1861 census for the same family daughter Arabella born c1854 was registered as Louisa Arabella mmn Fenley
On the same census Adeline age 3 was registered Dec 1/4 1857 as Adela Emma mmn Fenley
Charles age 5was registered as William Charles sept 1/4 1855 mmn Fenley
Fenley ties in better with the marriage entry of Henley on freeBMD.

Yes that is them. The one I am interested in is James. He came out to Australia when he was 18 and i could not work out why they would send their first son out to here on his own. HE states that his father is John on his marriage cert.

Thanks for the help. So do you think the marriage in 1844 is correct but has the wrong spelling of her surname. There is an Elizabeth Findley born Weymouth. But it is so hard when the surname is spelt so differently.

Hi, There is a Eliza Townly living in Bloxworth in 1841 before they were married, her age is given as 25-29.
She is a governess, so unlikely to be the same family.

Need help.  John married an Eliza in the Dec quarter in Wareham 1844. There are two entries for this marriage. I am guessing one is not correct.
Given that there are John Burden, John Burder, Eliza Tunley and Eliza Henley among the six names, I imagine they are the same marriage with two or more entries mistranscribed.

Eliza always gives her place of birth as Weymouth and there are two possible baptisms:

Elizabeth Fendley bap Dec 1821 d William (sailor) and Anne
Eliza Fendley bap July 1820 d Simon (labourer) and Elizabeth

The former is in the 1841 census with her father and sister, but all three are also there in 1851, so it can't be her.

The second one was baptised at the same time as her brother, Simon. Their father, Simon, died in 1838 aged 48 in the poor house. Their mother is probably the Elizth Findley, 56, living in Weymouth (HO107/295/18) who died in 1875. Simon Jr was a sailor as he appears in a hospital register in 1849, aged 32. Simon FINDLEY and Elizabeth HOLLETT married in 1817.

Thank you Richard. As you say Eliza always give her birth as Weymouth so I was able to follow her up to her death. So her father is Simon  Findley and her mother is Elizabeth Hollett. That is really great news. Now I have the grandparents for James Burden who came out to South Australia in 1865 aged 18. I will get his birth cert which will  have Eliza maiden name on it. Many thanks
Pat
