Englishman in Ireland
« on: Saturday 07 April 18 13:07 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have just discovered that my great great grandfather left his home in Cheshire England for Ireland at some point in the 1920s/30s. I was told he left after his wife died in 1917, but he is recorded on the electoral rolls for Wrenbury Cheshire in 1920.
I never could find him in the 1939 records, but have now found him on the New York passengers list as visiting in 1939, residence Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland.

I cant find anymore records of him relating to his time in Ireland or when he got there. I havent had to do any research in Ireland before so i am a little stuck. Can anyone help?

His name was Samuel Percy Broughton born 1860 Manchester. The ship log records him as married, so I'm keen to find out if he had an Irish bride!

See this is where it gets complicated. His headstone in Wrenbury Cheshire says he died 27th August 1944, but i havent been able to find a death for this. The age given at death would put his birth in 1862, which is wrong. I cant help but wonder if perhaps he died in Ireland and his family didnt know and bodged a date?
The death record you have sent fits with everything in terms of age and location!

I am trying to see any other records but not seen anything yet.
Does the record you found show who he was visiting in 1939?

I have seen the manifest now. Interesting that home contact was friend Mrs Carroll, of Bray and Daniel Carroll was death informant.
