It looks to me like Canicraig, but I can't see anything like that on a map or in a search.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Is this an illegitimate birth ( 'his wife' scored out)? If so, David Ross may not necessarily be from/ living in Huntly.
Isobel

It wasn't until I saw this record that that thought crossed my mind, it's never been mentioned that William was illegitimate but of course details have been sketchy so I'm hoping to tidy up some loose ends but I saw this and it opened up more questions than it answered. I have no siblings for William that I can find so it's a possibility he was illegitimate...

- Clark (Bellie, Moray, Scotland)
- Parker (Bristol, England/West Indies)
- Appleyard (Tadcaster, Yorkshire, England)
- Wheatley (London, England)
- Gallagher (County Donegal, Ireland)
- Lambert (County Limerick, Ireland)
- Casbolt (Cambridgeshire, England)
- Slavin (County Armagh, Ireland)
- McBride (County Armagh, Ireland)

I would have thought that if he was illegitimate, then his mother's name would have come first, then the father's, but I could be wrong

And he's taken his father's surname as well but odd that 'his wife' is so obviously crossed out huh?

If there is any doubts about parents' marriage, etc., it would possibly be mentioned in the Kirk Session records.

How are other births on the same page described? Do they contain the words 'his wife' when describing the mother of a child?

A shortening of Candacraig (which is in Strathdon), perhaps?  Billy Connolly used to bide there.

Also, it notes 'not paid' next to the entry, which makes me think this was an illegitimate birth. The session clerk was probably so used to writing 'his wife' that it became habit, thus scored out in this case. Kirk session records might have more in them about the couple.

There are some trees on Ancestry which indicate that Jane Gordon died in Torquay in 1841, but I don't see any likely death under either Ross or Gordon.
