I think that the eldest child with John & Elenor in 1851 (Mary) could be Elenor's child by another relationship  :-\  John is 30 in 1851, Elenor is 40

In the newspaper article i mentioned it says Sarah was walking across some fields on her way home on a Sunday night and was met by Sellars and Calvert and that Sellars tried to kiss Sarah Garside but she resisted so he threw her down and commited a criminal assault upon her, Calvert who stood by during the time attempted a similar assault .Sellars defence was the girl was consenting party and only brought the present charge because Calvert denied that he interfered futher tha threatning to tell the girl's sister. He was discharged , Sellars was committed for two months.

I have just checked the St Mary's Ecclesfield church baptism's and found

John Garside baptised 19th Nov 1854 mother Sarah Garside single woman workhouse
I assume John Garside is the result of his mother being assaulted and after John Oxley married her he became John Oxley

For John Oxley and Sarah Garside's other children i have

George baptised 1857 died 1857
Polly baptised 1861 died 1861
Walter baptised 1861 aged 3 died 1861
Arthur baptised 1868
Henry baptised 1868

The newspaper report about the assault was dated 17 June 1854 and stated that it happened on Sunday night.  John Garside was baptised 5 months later  ???

I have found a sarah Garside baptized Ecclesfield 1824 Parents Benjamin and Sarah and also an Alice baptized 1827 and an Ann baptized in 1822 living at Oughtibridge.

1841 census Bradfield there is a family
Benjamin  Garside 41
Ann Garside 18
Alice Garside 14
Thomas Garside 13
Elizabeth Garside 9

1841 census Bradfield The Poggs or The Haggs
Sarah Garside 15
living with a Shaw family

Alice Garside i think died in 1843, I think Thomas was baptized at Bradfield in 1828 and i have Ann Garside marrying a William Sheldon Sheffield 1849

1851 census Bradfield
Ann Dickinson born 1807  head widow file cutter Bradfield
Sarah Dickinson born 1828 daughter Bradfield
George Dickinson born 1831 son file smith Bradfield
Benjamin Garside born 1800 brother widow file smith Bradfield

1851 Hatfield house and Brush House Ecclesfield
Ann Calvert 65 head Bradfield Beerhouse Keeper
George Calvert 32 son  Gregghouse yorks File cutter
Joseph Calvert 20 son Gregghouse yorks File cutter
Thomas Guzide 23 lodger Oughty bridge File cutter

1851 Sheffield Daisy Walk
William Sheldon  lodger 1817 Ecclesfield Fork maker
Ann Sheldon 1822 Sheffield Fork Burnisher
George 1842 Sheffield
Emma 1845 Sheffield
John 1849 Stavley Derbyshire
living with John Linder and family

1851 census Rotherham Clifton Bank
sarah Garside 1834 servant born looks like Lingard ( think it's near Huddersfield )
living with Amos dyson and family

The parents of Benjamin Garside are James and Hannah Garside and William Sheldon looks like he was baptized 1817 Ecclesfield parents George and Sarah a Labourer Coit lane Bar

1841 Census Oughtibridge Bradfield
James Garside 74
Hannah Garside 71
Ann Dickinson 35
Sarah Dickinson 13
George Dickinson 10

Ann Garside married John Dickinson 7th May 1827 Ecclesfield

1861 Census Low Road bradfield
Ann Dickinson 54  head Ecclesfield
Sarah Dickinson 33 Daughter Ecclesfield file cutter
George Dickinson 30 son Ecclesfield File Cutter
Henrietta Dickinson 9 granddaughter scholar Ecclesfield

1871 census sheffield Egerton street
William Sheldon  head 1817 Ecclesfield fork manufacturer
Anne Sheldon wife 1822
John Sheldon son aged 23 Stavley derbyshire File Cutter
Joseph Sheldon son 1852 sheffield white metal smith
Thomas sheldon son 1857 sheffield
Edward sheldon son 1860 sheffield
Mary A Sheldon daughter 1864 sheffield

1871 census Brinnington Stoockport
Thomas Garside head 1827 oughty bridge Master File cuttler employing 2 men and son
Elizabeth Garside wife 1839 Sheffield
Benjamin Garside son 1856 Stalybridge

They are the only Sarah Garside's i can find in the census apart from the one born in 1830 who is up in Durham in 1841 .

I found these Garside's in the 1841 census showing no parents

!841 Sheffield Park
Ann Newcombe 67
Joseph Garside 12
Thoms Garside 9

1841 sheffield Attercliffe
John Garside 15 miner

i am wondering if she is not a Garside , perhaps a Garside got her pregnant and she just called herself Garside pretending to be married and he's left her and the baby after she has been asualted and thats why she ended up in the workhouse.
I know it's her in the workhouse because her son John is an Oxley in the 1861 and 1871 census and from 1881 census onwards he uses the surname Garside . John marries Sarah Hartley and his brother Henry Oxley marries Sarah's sister Margaret Hartley
Think i will send for John Garside's birth certificate to see if i can learn anything from it .I really don't think it is the Sarah born Sheffield 1830 to John and Mary unless Mary married again and lived in Ecclesfield i can't understand why she would leave her family in Durham.

Henry Garside born 1816 Sheffield married Ann Mettam 1839 Rotherham

That marriage has Henry's father, John, described as a cutler, not a puddler and they are two very different occupations.
