Identification of uniform in (victorian?) group photo
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 09:36 BST (UK) »
Good morning and thank you in advance for any help that can be given,

I have come across this photo and would love to know more about the date / regiment involved so that I can explore whether it contains a possible ancestor.

Many thanks,

Nic

I think we have & the conclusion was a Scottish Regiment but unclear as to which one as the cap badges are indistinct.
Edwardian rather than Victorian I believe.

Thanks Jim - I was hoping that it would match with something from Wales - oh well!

Good afternoon,

Date would be between 1881 and 1914.

White facings so not a royal regt.

Not sure about the Scottish, no tartan trews as far as I can see. No cut away jackets either, need to check my book on when they were introduced.

No dicing on glengarries which would reduce the no of Scottish possibles.

Many regt's other than Scottish wore glengarries during that period.

I was hoping for more info. I really should write things down when they appear. Jampot cuffs were between year and year. Collar and cuffs are white which means English or Welsh regiment. Scots yellow and Irish green. Royal regiments blue.

Hope this spurs a real expert to confirm or correct.

Thanks John and Regorian - possibly a little closer to it being a Welsh Regt?

That depends on the hat badge. They're hardly ever very distinct.
