Dickens, William James (driver RASC) - help with more information please
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 09:58 BST (UK) »
Good morning and thank you in advance for any help that can be given,

I have attached the certificate of transfer to reserve on demobilisation paper but despite the wealth of information that it contains, I have not been able to find any other information about this individual's service record on ancestry or findmypast.  Help from the rootschat community is, as always, very welcome and much appreciated.

Update: I have found him on the medal card index as Dickins rather than Dickens (although correct Regimental number).

Regards,

Nic

A possibility:

1901
14 Livermore Rd, Shoreditch

3 households at that address, one of which is:
Ellen E Dickens 24 dtr  Silk tee maker
Annie J Dickens 22 dtr House cap machinist
William J Dickens 9   son    all bn Shoreditch

no head of the household.

Person above, also at that address but a different household , is 83 yr old widow Susannah Garret, who no way could be their mother!

What else do you know about your William?  You say he is William James, yet that hasnt come from the discharge papaer as that only has William J on it.

Thank you Liz,

William is a friend's great grandfather who wanted to know more about his military service.  Thank you for your help in researching the census data, however, he was a Cardiff boy.

The J is confirmed as James by my friend's mother.

t appears that only his medal record has survived from which we can tell he first went overseas with the Army Service Corps on 24 July 1915.  It appears the discharge paper has been kept in the family recording his discharge in 1919.  His T1 number indicates he was in the horse transport side of the ASC.

You may know that some 60% plus of service records were lost in bombing in WW2, his would seem to have been among them.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
