martin maker
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 18:08 BST (UK) »
Hello, could anyone help with this occupation please? It is the occupation (If I'm reading it correctly!) of my Gt Gt Grandfather in 1870.

Many Thanks

Just a guess. Could it be martingale maker? It's part of a horse's harness. That would make him a harness maker or saddler. Any evidence of leatherwork in the family or the area?
Where did you find the occupation written?
Have you found him on a census? Where did he live?

Hi Maiden Stone, thanks for your reply.

I did wonder if it could be martingale maker. This occupation is on his son's birth certificate in 1870, however, on his wedding certificate in 1869, he gives his job as General Merchant. On the 1861 census, he is a baker apprentice, and by 1881, he was a Master Baker. This ties in with what I knew about the family. All information has come from Scotland's People.

Can you put a snip of the census here so we can see the image? Those occupations don't quite all fit together.  ;)

Hi maddys52,

I can't for the life of me work out how to attach the snip  ??? ! However, as I've been staring at the writing, it all fell in to place...... Martin Maker is badly written and of course, is Master Baker!!

I must confess, although highly embarrassed, it did make me laugh  ;D

Shuffling off to hang my head in shame......

Thanks,
Meggy

 ;D ;D ;D

Sounds like something I would do - the misinterpretation, not the baking!

I'm glad light has dawned.
If he had been a harness maker his occupation would probably have been saddler.
