SCOTT Family - Fraserburgh
« on: Wednesday 11 April 18 19:51 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information about the family of Alexander Scott and his wife Joan Robb Ogston.

I know that they had 7 sons:
  • Alexander
  • John
  • Lewis (1909-1978) married Mary Cassie - my grandfather
  • William
  • James
  • Charles
  • Gordon
I don't know much about my great uncles beyond the bits and pieces my mother has told me, if anyone has information about them, or is descended from them, I would love to know.

One question, is this Gordon Scott the same Gordon Scott as played for Fraserburgh FC at the same time as my grandfather?

The first thing you should do is go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, invest in a few credits and look up Lewis Gordon in the 1911 census. This will tell you how old his parents and elder brothers were, where they were born (and therefore where to look for birth records), his father's occupation, age and birthplace, his mother's age and birthplace and how long his parents had been married, how many children they had had and how many of those children were still living.

This will lead you to the marriage certificate, which will tell you the full names of Alexander's and Jean's parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.

You could also look in the deaths indexes at SP for deaths of Scotts with mother's name Ogston. This might lead you to information about later generations.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

It's strange, that FamilySearch has Alexander Scott, husband of Joan Robb Ogston

"Birth: 25 April 1872, Aerdeen Aberdeenshire Scotland
Death: 5 December 1906, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England"

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LL7K-W6T

yet he's on the 1911 census. Must be the wrong information from someone with a tree.

I think most of the births for this family are registered as Ogston
This looks a possible record on the 1901 census address 49,Brachheads Fraserburgh
Elizabeth Ogston age 60 born about 1841 Tyrie occupation fish worker
Joan Ogston age 27 born 1874 New Pitsligo occupation gen domestic
William Gibb age 9 born 1891 Fraserburgh grandson mother Joan Ogston
Alexr Scott age 3 born about 1898 Fraserburgh mother same as above
John McIntosh Scott age 1 born about 1900 Fraserburgh

Birth for a William Gibb Robb 20 July 1891 Fraserburgh
Mother Joan Robb

Birth for Joan Robb Ogston 20 July 1873
Mother Elizabeth Ogston

Seems to be quite a lot of name changing with this family
