Obviously you will need certificates, starting with the 1843 birth certificate, to confirm details.

If John Bell and Ann Thompson didn’t marry (I can’t find it) then he did at least marry Hannah Dixon so there would be paternal details for him on that certificate.

Thank you so much AVM228  :). That is fantastic information. I have been struggling to progress with Family Search. Have I been searching in the wrong place.

Many thanks again

I have found a John Johnson Bell born 4 May 1810 and baptized 24 Feb 1811 in Allendale. Parents William Vickers Bell and Ann Jordan.
Just wondered if this could be the John Bell referred to by AVM228 and trish1120. There is a potential 5 year date difference

Tempting, isn’t it!  But caution is required, as I see there is another John Bell - a butcher - born in Allendale about that time, living in Alston.

1861: 49 b Allendale
1871: 61 b Allendale

Also, there is a possibility that William Vickers Bell and Ann’s son John baptised in 1810 didn’t survive, and a later son of the same couple was called John.  The “recycling” of the names of deceased children was common.

To avoid going astray in your research, you really will those certificates to prove the links in the chain, stage by stage.

The 1846 marriage certificate for John Bell and Hannah Dixon should give you his paternal details.

Thanks again avm228. Yes I need to request certificate to prove beyond doubt.

Interestingly I have just found another John Johnson Bell born 1883, mother's maiden name Telford, and registered in Lanchester Co Durham. This would appear to be the son of William Vickers Bell born 1843 and Ann Telford who were married in 1876 and lived in the area at the time. Also John Johnson Bell died in 1883 Castle Ward Northumberland. They also had a son Henry Charles Bell born in1884 , registered Castle Ward. The family seemed to have lived between Co Durham and Northumberland in the 1880s.
