Farm Overseer

Hi ,
me confused here  ???,......what is a Farm Overseer please ????
is he someone who rents the farm & runs it as his own ?
or is he someone who the farmer has employed  (like a supervisor) to keep eye on staff. ect

I think he was more likely to be an employee, similar to a manager or foreman.

Like a farm bailiff, he was responsible for seeing the farm was run properly and the rent was paid on time.

"Overseer" or "overlooker" is what today is called "middle management".

The equivalent working underground in a coal mine is "underlooker".
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
