Isle of Wight Barracks c1817-1823 ???
« on: Sunday 07 August 05 12:19 BST (UK) »
Hi

Has been suggested I post my query on this board in case any army historians can help.

I have an ancestor, (William Bradd) place of birth - Isle of Wight c1831.  (Father John Bradd).

Two of his older sisters were christened on the Isle of Wight on the same day - 7.12.1823 in Carisbrooke, although the oldest was born in 1817.  On the younger of these two sisters the place of birth in 1851 census is stated merely as 'British Subject'  (haven't found the older sister in 1851 although she may have died previously).

Am exploring the possibility that father was a soldier stationed on the Isle of Wight but abroad for the birth of the first two children - and waited until back on British soil to have them christened.  Would anyone know how likely this would be?  And which regiments would be on the Isle of Wight at this time?  Subsequent children were born on the Isle of Wight - the last one around 1831.

By the 1850s the family were in Hertfordshire (Layston, Buntingford).   There is every possibility that this is the general are where they originated - I have a couple of copies of removal orders for a John Brad and Sarah his wife - from Cambridge back to Bishop's Stortford in 1815 and 1816 (the 1816 was suspended because Sarah was pregnant).  I also have a William and Charity Brad being removed from Layston to Bishop's Stortford in 1811.  Would anyone know if there are links between Hertfordshire regiments and the Isle of Wight at this time?

Thanks for bearing with .......any ideas anyone?
