Details on a Birth Certificate
« on: Friday 13 April 18 19:31 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the name of the mother on a birth certificate that was registered in Stoke-On-Trent. The child was born on 13 April 1928. I know the full name of the father but the index only gives me the mother's maiden surname. Would the registrar have also written the mother's full name i.e her first name or names and where she lived or would they have only recorded her maiden surname?

You would need to order the birth certificate to get the full details.  That should have mothers full name but not where she lived - just where the baby was born.

Have you tried looking for a marriage using the fathers name and the mothers surname prior to the birth?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Not sure they married hence the reason I need a full name of the mother

In addition to the mother’s full name (which will be recorded) you may also get her address if she was the informant.  This may or may not be different from the baby’s place of birth, which is separately recorded on the certificate.

This site is helpful if you are not familiar with English civil registration certificates:

Ok thanks for your help. I guess I need to bite the bullet and get the certificate. I wanted to know that it contained more information than the surname in the index. Since I have all the other information then spending £10 on a certificate that gives me no more information than I already know is a bad deal.

Once again thanks...I suggest this is closed..and I will order a copy

Yes the PDF version as you say does not apply because of the cut-off dates currently applied.
I think it was high time there was a small smaller charge for the basic information. Not everyone wants or needs a certificate.

Recently I wrote to GRO in Ireland who gave me the option of providing information for 4 euro or 12 euro for the full blown certified copy. I only wanted the detail not the certificate. Why can't we do that in England.....is there anyone who thinks we could start a petition to change how it works here!
