Have you checked the early census’ for other Hopkin/Hopkins ‘table blade makers’?

So from the birth reg of Selina daughter age 8 in the 1851 census Mary - wife of Mark Hopkin - has the maiden name Longley.
No marriage on FreeBMD but marriage reg only started in Sept 1/4 1837 so if before that it will ba a parish record we are looking for. I couldn't see anything on familysearch.org but there is a marriage on FreeReg for a Mary Longley in Silkstone in the West Riding of Yorkshire 1831 but it is to an Edward Lawton and 1831 seems a bit early if the child Mary age 3 on the 1841 census is the eldest child of the marriage.

I have in my tree that he married Mary Ann Longley on February 7 of 1837 in the St. Peter & St. Paul Cathedral.

This is a good idea. I did pour over many census records yesterday in search of people who could have variations of the name Hopkin (Hopkins, Hopkinson, etc) who might have had a son named Mark, or a father with the first/middle name Mark etc. But I didn't think to look at blade makers.

This definitely looks accurate, but I confess, I haven't confirmed as many sources for her yet. I had looked for a marriage record for her with hopes that his parents might be on it as witnesses or something, but maybe it was too early for that. I'll work on her to see if I learn anything helpful.

Can you identify the son / daughter  of Mark HOPKIN  from whom you are descended.

Can you give birth, death and marriage details for this person.........locations, names, dates, relevant to BDM events for this ancestor........child of Mark HOPKIN.

Where are you seeing a possible name change?

Absolutely. I am descended from his daughter Lavinia Hopkin and then down the Bingley line.

Birth record has only that she was born in Sheffield. Ancestry shows in her "Story" that she was born March, 1856  in Sheffield. Where else can birth date information this detailed be found? In other words, where is Ancestry getting this birth date?

Marriage to John James Bingley 09 April 1876, St. Mary's in Sheffield. I haven't found sources for this much detail so I am wondering if my grandma has physical records and added the data manually. I have on a marriage index that she was married in 1876 in Sheffield.

Regarding the name change, I don't see any evidence of it, it was only speculation from my grandmother based on her knowledge of a falling out between Mark and his parents after he was arrested.

Thank you for your interest and time.

From the official GRO indexes. If she was born late in March, then her birth may not have been registered until early April,ie appearing in the June 1/4.
