William WEDDELL , landed in Dunedin in the 1870s

Hi GailS,
I am a newcomer to this research. I am the Great Grandson of William Weddell who landed in Dunedin in the 1870s and who died in 1915 in Dunedin and is buried in Anderson's Bay Cemetery. My Grandfather was William Weddell.
I understand from my daughter she has fleeting chats with you about 8 years ago and as I am now taking over from her on family research I was wondering I I can get any further leads re this family from you.

I see from the link that Jamjar posted that there is some confusion as to when William was born.  The passenger list gives an age of 31 in 1878 thereby giving a birth year of 1847.  The death record from the NZ bmd website suggests that he was born in 1835.

The marriage record of William (widower) and Isabella on Scotlands People again gives a birth year of 1847.  They were married on 23rd March 1877 in Paisley.  William's father was also called William and was a slater.

Either the death record from NZ records has the wrong age, or the person registering his death didn't know how old he was and made a guess.

What information do you have about the Weddell family?

William is in the 1871 census with his first wife Helen and their children  Helen (1867), William (1868) and Claud (1871).

Helen Weddell died in 1875.

Added: His marriage to Helen gives a birth year of 1846 as he was 20 when he married Helen in 1866.
