Elizabeth Styles Hills
« on: Sunday 15 April 18 15:38 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for information on a distant relative Elizabeth Styles Hills who seemed to have an interesting life.
She was born to Jonathan Hills and Mary Ann Ormand in 1868 in Ormand, Essex. Sometime in the mid 1880s her mother died and her father remarried one Matilda Elizabeth Ramsay b. 1852. Elizabeth in turn married this woman's brother John James Moore Ramsay when she was 15 and he 18 years her senior. Their first child Elizabeth was born in 1884 in Italy where the family lived until around 1890. Her husband died in 1891 and in 1893 she died in Fareham Hospital, a mental asylum in Hampshire at the age of 25.
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me find out why she was in a mental asylum or anymore information that can be uncovered.
Thanks, Daniel

What was the cause of her death  :-\

Sometimes women ended up in mental hospitals suffering from post natal depression  ::)

Buried 5th July 1893, Queens Road Cemetery, Waltham Forest, Walthamstow.

She left a Will;  probate granted to James Brown Grant and Rev Frederick William Vernham. You can apply for a copy, cost £10.

She married in 1887, at Medway, Kent.

A daughter Margaret was born in Marsala, Italy in 1888.

as per nanny jan she married 1887 registered Medway Kent and daughter Margaret born Italy 1888.

1891 census Walthamstow Essex has 3 other children John aged 9, Elizabeth 7, and Mary aged 5, all born in Italy  so Mr. John James Moore Ramsey had to have been a widower when they married.
She could not be the mother of these children.
Margaret born Italy is aged 2 and George  aged 7 months was registered West Ham 1890.

son George was baptised St Saviour's 15 October 1890 it gives a birth date of 19 August 1890.

He seems to have been adopted by Henry J Warwick and his wife Sophia Ann. (1901 census)

You probably already have this
1901 census Walthamstow Essex
John Ramsey 19 nephew born Italy
Mary Ramsey 15 , niece born Italy
Margaret 12 grand daughter born Italy.

They are living with Jonathan Hills and his wife Matilda E. parents of Elizabeth Styles Hills.

So was John James Moore Ramsay's first wife a relative of Jonathan Hills first wife Ormand, or another of the Hills family? Curiosity

ADDED
Margaret 22 and also grandson George 20 are with them in 1911

Have just reread the originating post - the older children are indeed nephew and niece of Matilda, being offspring of her brother.

You say that Elizabeth’s mother died mid-1880s, but Jonathan was already a widower in 1881 and married Matilda Elizabeth Ramsey on 2 October 1882 (St Paul, Bow Common).

1881 census for Jonathan Hills, b abt 1837 Leigh, Essex (lodging in Gillingham): RG11/890/135/3.
