Edward Harrison (Woods) b ca 1830 Liverpool
« on: Monday 16 April 18 03:03 BST (UK) »
Hi.
Looking for assistance please with finding the birth of Edward Harrison in Liverpool circa 1830.
Edward marries Ellen Harrison (same surname) 12th Feb 1854 in Church of St John the Baptist. Her father is William Harrison, labourer and we know details of that family.  However Edwards father is recorded as William Woods, painter. That suggests he was born out of wedlock and his mother was a Harrison or alternatively he took his step-fathers surname.
His witness on the marriage record is a Robert Harrison though that may be Ellen's brother Robert who was the next sibling in her family.

I can not find him yet in 1841C or 1851C.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Regards
Warwick

Looking through ancestry
William Woods married Mary Harrison at St James Liverpool 26 January 1824.

transcription so no image available.

This is before Edward was born so a possibility he dropped his fathers name of Woods in favour of his mothers maiden name.

Further research required

The image of the 1824 marriage is on Anc under Liverpool, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns.   Williams Woods is listed as a Widower and a Blacksmith - Witnesses William Makin and William Johnson

Hi. Thank you both for this information. Have tracked the William Woods m Mary Harrison through census's and there is no Edward in that family. Also that William Woods is a blacksmith.

The William Woods on Edwards marriage details is a Painter.
Have found two William Woods who are painters in 1841C aged 30 (probably rounded off so born somewhere 1811 plus or minus 2 years) in Walton-on-Hill. The first appears to be with his mother Susannah and probably siblings Susannah 35, Hugh 25 and Mary 15. Also a John aged 25.

The second is with his father William and brother Thomas (age 32). Yet to track this family in later years.

The first William is in 1851C (listed on Ancestry as Woody), 1861C, 1871C and 1881C. Listed as a Painter on all in Kirkdale. Appears never to marry as living with siblings.
No sign yet of Edward Harrison.
Any further ideas would be appreciated.

Probably unrelated but just in case - I keep coming back to this Edward Hamson in 1851 -  on Anc transcribed at Harrison  :-\

Sorry https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGYG-MCZ
He is listed as a nephew of Robert and Mary Usherwood who seem to have children with a number of different surnames.   At the moment I can see them in other census years

Thank you Kay.
I've done a quick scan - yet to find them in 1841C - did you find that one.
The Family Search link you gave varies from Ancestry where Robert is aged 39 and not 29.
Also Edward is listed as a Baker on your link but taking a closer look at the original I'm thinking it might be 'Painter'. What do you think? Especially when compare to P for Pensioner above that and the K in Bricklayer at top of page.
So yet to link to other family to get Harrison name if he is a nephew.
Also thinking that Robert remarried. There is a wedding to a Mary Lever in 1847 but a death in 1848. (if that is the right Robert). Would explain the Twittle children and then Jane I(U)sherwood aged 1 in 1851C.   But the Hannah U aged 15 suggests could be earlier wife.

Cheers

I haven't found the family in 1841 at the moment and agree that Robert could be 29 or 39 but presumably 39 is more likely given the age of his wife and children.   Looking at the image in 1851   I think that Edward's occupation looks more life Baker than Painter

Is the 1847 marriage you refer to 28/05/1847 Bolton-Le-Moors - Mary Lever to Robert Isherwood.  I can see a marriage for Robert Usherwood but given the image the surname might be Isherwood  :-\   The 1847 Isherwood marriage to Mary Lever is on Anc and lists Robert Isherwood as a bachelor of full age - a Turner -

I can't see a birth for a Jane Usherwood in Liverpool in 1848-1850 on the GRO Birth Index that would match the Jane in the 1851 census to help with mother's maiden name but I think there is a burial of a Jane Usherwood age 2 on 17 June 1852 St John, Liverpool that might be her

Re  the Whittle children in 1851 Thomas and Elizabeth - the GRO Birth Index the following births both with mothers maiden name Thompson so possibly  :-\
ELIZABETH  WHITTLE  mmn    THOMPSON
GRO Ref 1842  June Qrtr 1842 LIVERPOOL  Vol 20  Page 352
THOMAS   WHITTLE mmn    THOMPSON
GRO Ref March Qrtr 1840 LIVERPOOL  Vol 20  Page 313

Hi Apologies for delay in responding to your last post - have been frantic with work and other commitments.
Have been tracking last few nights your suggested Edward Harrison in 1851C. Trying to determine others in the 1851C.
The Whittle children can be traced to William Whittle m Margaret Thompson in June 1833 Liverpool. Both William and Margaret are found aged in 1841C aged 30 with children Hannah 6 and Thomas 2.
There are several deaths for William Whittle in Liverpool post 1841C but more likely to be 1848 March quarter.
Hannah appears in 1851C with surname Usherwood while Thomas has his Whittle surname.
However Roberts wife is Mary - either a name change or Robert first marries Margaret and then he married a Mary in time for 1851C. Yet to find any Robert Usherwood marriages which suit.
William Simpson could be brother of a wife of Roberts OR previously married to sister of Robert. He was a Fusilier (army) with daughter born in Gibraltar as BS. No immediate links identified.

The Usherwood 1851C record is on Ancestry but family is Ushorwood and Simpson is Sampson.
