Young, Alfred Frederick
« on: Monday 16 April 18 19:29 BST (UK) »
His grandmother says he was born in Battersea in 1884. I can't find him in the BMD. He lived with his grandmother Ann Young in 1891 in Winsley, Bradford On Avon, Wiltshire. Then they both moved to Canada in 1896. I think his father was Fred Young born 1853/1860 Wiltshire, died 1895 Bradford On Avon, Wiltshire. Mother might be called Margaret. I don't think the parents were married. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat.

Was he born Alfred Frederick, or did he adopt the name Alfred later? You may need to look for a registration for Frederick.

In the Census he is Frederick, depending on his date of birth and the date of the census, his birth year may have been 1883.

Yes a good point, on both the 1891 and voyage he is shown as plain Frederick, so when did Alfred come into being, and why not the son of Emily?

I have his marriage certificate (married in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada 1908) that states his name as Alfred Frederick Young and the birth place looks like Essex but the writing is hard to see clearly. Mother name Margaret.

Then you have another contradiction, because the census shows Battersea which was Surrey not Essex.

Have you found him on the Canadian census?

Bear in mind that some people used their middle names instead of their first, reasons differ. I have several ancestors who caused confusion by doing exactly that. So he may have been born Alfred Frederick, but been known as Frederick
