Fate of Edward Millen - convict?
« on: Tuesday 17 April 18 07:18 BST (UK) »
Hi lovely people! I'm researching an ancestor Edward Millen who was born in 1824 in Kent, UK and transported to Van Dieman's land in 1845 for stealing a basket of eggs! He received a conditional pardon and was sent to Victoria, but I'm struggling to find what happened to him from there.

I found this: http://search.archives.tas.gov.au/ImageViewer/image_viewer.htm?CON33-1-70,313,185,L,70 and it looks like he was in Avoca (see remarks on the side), but I can't find a death for him in Australia and I've tried all the usual sources.

Can anyone help please?  Many thanks!

Just to clarify, this refers to Avoca in Tasmania, not Victoria

Cupoflife, if we disregard the age and place of birth, this “could” be him. There’s parish records for a marriage of Edward Millen to Elizabeth Startup - startup could have been mis-transcribed from Stanley but I can’t find an image of the parish records, just transcriptions.

If this is the right Edward, it looks like they had a few children. I might have to buy his marriage certificate to Margaret to check this out.

Ok, a bit more digging and it’s definitely not the right Edward Millen.

The Edward on the records cupoflife found was born in London in 1831 to Edward and Eliza.  I found the parish baptism. Both marriages in 1854 and 1857 are his.

So that puts me back to square one. He was sent to Victoria and then what?

He wasn't sent to Victoria.  He was free and chose to go there.
