Geoff, no sign of a McKenzie on the 1855 Valuation Rolls. BTW, in case you do further address checks, I think it is is Spence's or Spences Place. Not sure this matters though if there is not McKenzie showing! About 26 people living at No.2 in 1855.

There's a Sarah Sutton born Closeburn circa 1822 on the 1851 Edinburgh census. She's down as married, /washerwoman , no husband present, with a daughter Barbara b.c. 1847. I can't find a link or a marriage but it's bugging me,  so I thought I'd mention it just in case!

Hi Monica,
I have looked at the Death Image more closely and you are correct her address is Spences Place as was another death entry on the same page.

Hi Monica.
The actual 1855 Valuation Roll for 2 Spences Place. St Cuthberts Parish shows 6 unnamed tenants who paid less than £4 rent each with total for the 6 carried forward at £20-12. This detail does not show up on the VR index so they may be within this group of 6

They may well be in that group, as you say. Not sure what to advice for you now.

Like Gadget, I have been trying to make headway with this 1861 census entry:

Robert Mckenzie 32 white smith b. Glasgow
Mary Ann Mckenzie 24 b. Edinburgh
Alexander Mckenzie 10 b. Edinburgh
John Mckenzie 6 b. Edinburgh
Mary Mckenzie 1 b. Edinburgh

Address: Jibboom (as transcribed) Square, Greenock Middle

I think from the possible birth on Family Search for Mary, mother may be MS Petrie:

Mary Jane Thom Mc Kenzie b. 27 February 1859 Edinburgh
Parents Robert Mc Kenzie and Mary Petrie

Can't see a marriage  :-\ Thought that with the age of Alexander, Mary Petrie might be a second wife/partner?

Monica
