William Whiteside b 1816 est Lancashire and Catherine Jones
« on: Tuesday 17 April 18 21:46 BST (UK) »
I’ve hit a brick wall on this lovely couple from Llanbeblig.

William Whiteside was born abt 1816 in Lancashire and worked as a Master Mariner. He married Catherine Jones in 1840 and they are recorded in the 1841 and 1851 census records living in Snowden Street Llanbeblig. There are other mariners living in the same street - were these cottages assigned to mariners specifically?

Catherine Jones was born abt 1816 in Edeyrn (Edern). And without clutching at too many straws I think her parents could be Rice Jones, a joiner born 1794 in Llanarmon, and Jane Richards, born 1795 in Dolbenmaen (non-conformists), who lived in llanbebler..Llanbeblig?

William Whiteside may have originated from Manchester or even Lancaster….working on ships, he may have come into Beaumaris from Liverpool.  I can't find any record of his death, but in 1861 Catherine is widowed and as head of the family she is working as a grocer and tea dealer. I can only assume William died between 1851-1861. Their son William Rice Whiteside becomes the local BMD registrar which is a nice twist on their story. And daughter Catherine marries a printer compositor.

I’d welcome any research advice on this family.

Thank you

This snippet suggests that William Whiteside was lost at sea.

Hi,

I found this short report about the loss of WHITESIDE,

Newcastle Courant 04 February 1853

Caernarvon, Jan 26, - the Margaret Harriett, Whiteside, of this port, was heard from on 25th December last and was reported by the master to be ready to sail on that day from Newcastle for Poole, since which time nothing has been heard of her, and it is greatly feared that she was lost in the storm that came on after.

Regards,
Daisy
