 Hello Folks,
I'm looking into my family tree and found my mothers family traveled around from Oxfordshire
to Monmouthshire, Dudley Worcestershire and Stafford during the 17/1800's
I've Thomas Greenway and wife Mary and son Noah as living in Harts Hill Dudley Worcestershire
with no house number or location really.
The family tree has the likes of Guests.Waterfields,Smiths,Timms and the Cartrights
I'm just wondering was Harts Hill a well known Romany gypsy settlement or camp really.
Sorry, if this is in the wrong section and thanks for any help.

  Carl

Hi Carl

I'm no expert on the travelling community - my family worked on the canals.  It may  be (or not) a coincidence that the places you mention all are on the canal network and some of the surnames have connections to families of boatmen.

I cannot help you with the location of any traveller sites. However,  quite often there would be factories or brickworks near to the canals as the boats would move about raw materials coal etc.  Perhaps your families worked in them.

Good luck with your search.

Hello
Can I just post a word of warning.
There are two Noah Greenaway's with a father Thomas in the area.

Noah Greenaway baptised Sedgley 4.5.1823 s of Thomas and Sarah miner Gornal Wood.
It looks like he married at Dudley 9.11.1840 to Mary Guest (fathers Thomas Greenwaway and Zac  Guest ) and in 1841 Pensnett miner 20 y with a Mary 15 y  they are in Kingswinford.
Parents Thomas and Sarah are in Sedgley 1841.
Thomas married Sarah Bradley at Sedgley 23 Jan 1809.

The other is Hartshill in 1841
Thomas Greenaway 45 miner N
Ann 45 n
Noah 20 N
Edward 15 N
Ann 14 N
Sarah 11 N

Edward 2.1.1825 born 1824 baptised at Dudley,Ann bapt 6.1.1826 at Dudley,Thomas 5.8.1828,Sarah 9.9.1829 also at Dudley but of Kingswinford.
Thomas married Ann Jones at Kingswinford 30.10.1823.

Noah miner married  9.10.1845 at St Peters Wolverhampton to Harriet Downing .
Father Thomas Greenaway miner wit Ann Greenaway

If you have the Guests in your tree they can't be the ones at Hartshill.
Most areas or hamlets on the 1841 census don't give a street ,that doesn't mean they are gypsies or travelling folk.
