Chiad, I can't promise anything but I have a friend by the name of Lavery whose brother did extensive research on the name. If it might be any help putting you in touch I would be happy to arrange it, although whether my friend's brother would want to help I can't say.

Nearest Poorhouse to Dennistoun would be the Barony Poorhouse Barnhill, later Foresthall Hospital, in Springburn, Scotland's largest.

Thanks, Skoosh. I think it's a look at the original to find out then.

I think it was St Joseph's Home - Little Sisters of the Poor, 180 Garngadhill. I had to view the header.

Hi everyone

You've all been working hard on my behalf looking for John's death while I've been in the garden enjoying the first day of summer here in Scotland.  However, I believe tomorrow is to be the last  :(

There's a lot of information to take in and a now there's a dire need for me to get over to Edinburgh and do some checking.

At least, thanks to Gadget, it's confirmed he wasn't the John Lavery who died in Hamilton (Lanarkshire) in 1882.

I've sent a PM to Martin accepting his offer.

Regards

Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited!

Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

Ah Gadget!  I remember it before it was demolished, now in a new building at Robroyston. Folk from the Garngad giving their address as Dennistoun would raise a few eyebrows in Dennistoun!  ;D  Must be a ward boundary or other?

A registration district Gadget! My gt grannie was a howdy & delivered weans in the Garngad. The Corporation tried changing the name to Royston to raise the tone but it's still the Garngad to the natives!  ;D
