Tag found in a garden in Gwaelod y Garth.
« on: Wednesday 18 April 18 19:53 BST (UK) »
I attach a picture of a tag probably made of tin, dug up in a garden of a cottage here. Does anyone know what it is or anything about the owner?I wouldn't even know where to start!  Details in the picture below. Is it an identity tag for someone claiming poor relief? Is it from a coffin or urn? Doesn't look like a military tag. Looking forward to your comments!

The family seem to go by the surname Harris. William J Harris can be found on free index 1939 register.

Same address, occ and DOB born 1895. Married Ethel M Williams in 1917 first child born 1919 and 3 others up to 1939. Maybe some descendents out there that would like to have it?

Cannot say I have seen anything like it stamped on tin, but feeling it maybe medical related? Others may know...

William Died 1978 in Newport, Mon.

Thanks, Cas.  Very clever research.  It still raises questions.  1895 is the birth date you say, yet it states, retired miner. Higher up, I assumed the M 65 meant male 65. No idea of other initials. WL 19.5. 60 dis = discharged? next day. The Ynysddu address, you say, is given as the birth address, yet the plate is found at Ffygys cottage Gwaelod y Garth! All very intriguing! Thanks for your research. I wondered if it was some sort of token for claiming poor relief? Will be interesting if others come up with more information. Norma

The same address as on 1939 register, not birth address.

By 1960s he would have been retired, when the plate seems to have been stamped.  I have not heard of 'poor relief' that late. As a miner working all those years seems he would have had his pension.

I wonder if it was an early form of medical talisman, and he suffered from silicosis or a similar illness.

Thank you so much. I tried to reply on site, but it didn't seem to go through. Very grateful. I run a small history group around the Lan Mine Disaster. The tin plate was posted there with a request for information. I will pass it on to the young woman who found it.  You researchers do a brilliant job. N

Hello

my Perry family lived at Gwaelod y garth in Mountain Ash from about 1892s to 1950s. Is this the same place?
Or are there several of same name?
Avril

Avril, The Gwaelod y Garth in question was formerly Lower Pentyrch. During the industrial period as more and more immigrants came to work the coal and iron, it took its own name. Sounds as if it's not the place you are mentioning. Thanks for your interest. Norma

Just to add on this old thread that "Dr Gilson" mentioned on the tag is most likely Dr John Cary Gilson who was a specialist in coal workers' pneumoconiosis and headed up the Pneumoconiosis Research Unit at Llandough Hospital.
