Did David Burns serve in the Crimean War?
« on: Wednesday 18 April 18 22:08 BST (UK) »
Hi. I have recently come across the discharge papers for David Burns in 1856. He was in the Royal Artillery 5th Battalion, regiment number 4253. According to the papers, he was stationed in Gibraltar and the West Indies. He was discharged due to medical reasons, as unfit for service. Does anyone know if he served in the Crimean War? Many thanks

The National Archives Crimean War Orders of Battle does list Nos 1, 2 and 7 Companies of 5th Battalion.  He doesn't come up in the medal lists as far as I can tell though.
You can download the relevant medal roll from the National Archives for free http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3763786
and trawl through it (unless the sunshine is more attractive!)

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thanks MaxD. Would you have any idea where in the West Indies the regiment would have been at that time? Many thanks

Example - No 6 Company of the 5th were in Barbados in November of 1855.  Part of No 2 Company was in Hilsea preparing to depart for the Crimea in July 1855.  Not easy to track the companies of the battalion on line except in snap shots!  Bedevilled by the habit of companies sometimes being referred to by their Captain's names and sometimes by their numbers.
