Marriage look up lease of Thomas COE and Jemima Coppen 8th February 1816
« on: Thursday 19 April 18 15:20 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage entry of Thomas Coe and Jemima Coppen who were married on the 8th February 1816 in Great Bradley, Suffolk. There is marriage entry on  Find My Past of a Thomas COX to Jemima Coppen but this is a transcription of the Parish Record rather than a viewable record.

Would there be an error in the transcription? I believe that there is but if anyone is going to the Suffolk record office at some point, I would appreciate it if they could double check the entry for me.
Regards
Alan

On the Suffolk Marriage Index 1813-1837 (SFHS) there is only a Thomas Cox m Jemima Coppen on the 8 Feb 1816.
There is no other Jemima Coppen nor Copping.
Several Thomas Coe, none of whom married a Jemima or wed in Gt Bradley.
Why don't you think Cox is correct?
Hopefully I'll make it to the RO tomorrow &  have time to have a bit of a look.

Many thanks for your reply.

The Thomas Coe I am looking for married a Jemima. Her surname doesn't appear in any of their children's baptismal entries in Sible Hedingham Essex. Coe is a common surname in Suffolk.

The problem arises from that virtually everyone on Ancestry has Jemima's surname as Coppen but this is because many just take what others have put on their trees as "gospel" without checking. I do not, as I want to be 100% proof positive.

Thomas was born in Stradishall, Suffolk so I suppose that they have assumed that he married there but this is not always the case. All of his children were born in Sible Hedingham between 1817 & 1834.

I need to check to see if there is an Essex Marriage index.

Kind regards
Alan

Many thanks for that. I'll keep searching and ignore the "experts" on various sites that assume that it is Coe.

Did they sign their names? Are there any subsequent baptisms anywhere to a Thomas and Jemima Cox?
Parish registers are not error free.
The marriage was in Great Bradley, and on every census return Jemima Coe says she was born Suffolk Great Bradley.
The only likely baptism of a Jemima in Great Bradley, time wise, is Jemima Coppen in 1793. But following the 1851 census, when Jemima Coe in Essex was 55, she seems to lose some years from her age, and was 72 on death (March qtr 1873)
I would keep an open mind.

Hi
Thanks for  replying. It's true that registers are not always correct as I have found out in the past and I'm trying to keep an open mind. The big problem is that people assume that just because the mother's name is Jemima, then it must be Jemima Coppen as it seems to fit.

Hephzibah very kindly did look at the microfice entry for me and it does looks like Cox. What I'm thinking of doing is taking a trip in July to the record office next time I visit a friend [who sadly is just not interested in what she calls "dead people"] and ask if I can see the original register. 99.9999% of record offices allow me to do this as I have problems reading fiche and film as I have very complex lenses in my glasses.

Alan
