Mary Scott and James Stephen
« on: Thursday 19 April 18 19:40 BST (UK) »
The parents of Elizabeth Stephen (married name Summers)  when she died in 1887 aged 100 in Port Errol, Cruden are given as James Stephen, Fisherman (deceased) and Mary Stephen m.s. Scott (deceased).  Census say the Elizabeth was born in Rathen.  Does anyone have any details of her parents Mary and James?  Thanks.

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk has their marriage 04 Dec 1783 in Barry and their 9 children.

Given the era not sure what else you seek; perhaps where they lived which the baptisms might state where this was.

According to FreeCEN
The 1841 says Aberdeenshire
The 1851 says Rathen, Aberdeenshire
The 1861 says Cairnbulg, Aberdeenshire.
The 1871 census says Banffshire, Rathven.

According to the LDS CD-ROM
The 1881 says Rathen, Aberdeenshire

I think Cairnbulg is in the parish of Rathen. So allowing for an error producing an intrusive v in 1871, the census is consistent, and incompatible with a birth in Barry. Is it possible that Elizabeth was born in Cairnbulg while her parents were temporarily there, and baptised later in Barry?

Have you seen the originals of all the baptism records of the children of James Stephen and Mary Scott in Barry?

Have you found any of the other Barry-baptised children in the census? Where does the census say they were born?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I've seen a couple of the Barry children in census and they have stayed in Angus so I don't believe it is the same family :(

Oh dear :(

I wonder if maybe the informant at Elizabeth's death got her parents' given names wrong?

Looking into John instead of James, there are different spellings of surnames i.e Stevens but could be them in Rathen!

Forfarian has it.  Elizabeth's baptism states her father was John but that could be a transcription error.  She was also baptised 5 years later so she would have been a bit shy of 100, but if you can reach that age its close enough.  The fishing port of Cairnbulg was there as well.
