If you look back at the original picture rather than the enlargement it looks far more like gloves. The thing around her wrist is the same on both arms, ie part of her dress.

I thought it was gloves too.

I thought it was gloves at first but then Jennifer put up the large snip and I noticed the very circular piece that didn't look like a glove and a possible bag below.

My husband said he thought it might be gloves, but to be honest I'm struggling to see that. I see a horseshoe shaped object  :-\

Looking at it on my large monitor now, Jennifer. It's not a bag as the bottom is really part of the jacket/top, but it does look horseshoe shaped- certainly a distinct curve.   Isn't it unlucky to hold one that way though  :-\

Yes, that's it, they do appear in some Victorian photos. Your lady is certainly holding something horseshoe-shaped, it's not gloves or a purse.
