Lawrence Maynard Thorpe-le-WIllows
« on: Friday 20 April 18 18:05 BST (UK) »
Hi.
Two Maynard brothers left Oldstead in 1894 for America, they were Lawrence b.1873 and William b.1868. Their father Matthew 1832-1898 farmed  Cold Cam farm in Olstead but in 1893 three things happened, he left to farm Thorpe Hall Farm in Thorpe-le-Willows, Ampleforth, his daughter died and two of his sons left for the USA. I can't work out which events sparked the others. William returned in 1896 and settled down to farm Long Grain farm in Wass and I thought that Lawrence remained in America.
I have just found a 1913 Kelly's Directory for Thorpe-le-Willows where Lawrence Maynard is the farmer. It can't be a coincidence and I can't find any other Lawrence Maynards but then again I can't find evidence of his marriage, death or anything else.
This is puzzling because until a couple of days ago I thought that he had stayed in USA.
I am trying to find evidence of Lawrence to place him in Yorkshire after 1894 and would appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks

Alison

There is an incoming passenger record for Lawrence arriving Liverpool from Valparaiso Chile on 29.8.1899

No subsequent census entry or marriage/death so he perhaps returned to the USA.  Is he on US census records?

Hi Carole. That's interesting, thanks. I can't find any other records of him after that.

That's incredible - thank you. I wonder what he was doing, he was in Illinois in 1900, Oldstead in 1913 and then in Alaska in 1920. That's a man who got around!
