What happened to the SS Hellas in Greece in April 1941?
« on: Friday 20 April 18 18:46 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I am helping a friend with their family history & am find it difficult to find much if any information about what happened to their ancestor!

This is the record from CWGC website for the ancestor in question: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2105981/curran,-john/

John Curran was a Gunner in the 580th Army Troops Company, Royal Engineers and died on 24th April 1941.

This date is the date the ship SS Hellas on which the 580th were on board sank in Piraeus Harbour after being hit after enemy action.

I can find little to nothing online about this incident, a small paragraph within the info for the 580th's on Wikipedia being almost it!. Have also only found 3 records in the National Archives Catalogue, two being lists of the missing/casualties & the other being the War Diaries for the 580ths, but with the month of April 41 missing.

Can anyone assist/help with finding out more details/info as to what happened both on that day & what happened to the SS Hellas & the 580ths.

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards

David

A quick 'google' came up with this http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=35572 , the first couple of replies contain quite a lot of information.

Hi JenB,

Many thanks for that, much appreciated.

That does give a little more detail that I didn't have! All adds to the overall picture of what happened, which is great.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Kind regards

David
