Scottish or British Primarily Scottish DNA
« on: Saturday 21 April 18 20:56 BST (UK) »
My Scottish Aunt (fathers big sister) was born in Glasgow
Her grandparents were all born in Lanarkshire or Renfrewshire
though further back some came from Ayr and maybe Isle of Moray

so I was not expecting  33% Scotland +55% Great Britain( 7% Scandinavian + 1%finnish is probably from distant Vikings .

on expansion Ancestry's definition of "Scottish" also includes Irish but my aunt has Scotland as the area

Then the Great Britain % is defined as "primarily Scotland "

so are there 2 types of Scottish ?
has anyone else come across this ?

Gaellic  lowland highland Islanders ... what could the divisions be /

I’d take most DNA ethnicity analysis with a pinch of salt. Mostly harmless entertainment, and about as accurate as a horoscope. It seems to assume that people never moved which is just nonsense. There has been so much internal migration around the British Isles in the past 4000 years as to make a DNA breakdown between Irish, Welsh, Scots, English etc pretty meaningless. Most of the population all share a common Brythonic origin ie they are descended from people who migrated north through France as the last ice age retreated. When they got to Britain they swarmed around everywhere. Some moved north to Scotland, some west to Wales. And many continued to move after that for military, economic and cultural reasons. Though southern England has been inhabited for 400,000 years, Ireland has only been inhabited for about 8000 years. Many of its early settlers came from Britain. Then many Irish moved to Scotland, notably around 495AD when the kingdom of Dalriada was established by the Scotiae tribe from Co. Antrim, who gave Scotland it’s name, and who ruled Scotland and part of Ulster. So Scotland is named after an invading Irish tribe who came in sufficiently large numbers to be able to rename the country and to introduce their own language, ie gaelic. In the 1600s, 100,000 Scots and a similar number of English and Welsh moved to Ireland as a part of the Plantation of Ireland and also because of a severe famine in Scotland in the late 1600s. From the 1800s they were moving back from Ireland to Britain in hundreds of thousands because the employment prospects were better there. Therefore the idea of the Irish and the Welsh, Scots & English being distinct ethnic groups for DNA purposes is just daft.

(DNA is good for lots of other aspects of ancestry though).

thanks elwyn    i now know what Bythronic is

the DNA for my mum was pretty good it had her 23% european jewish which came from grandfather
and her British componant did mention 26% Welsh
she had 10% scandinavian

my own had 8% candinavian
i was 31% scots and 41% English and 14% jewish

My own English dna was expanded to be "primarily English Welsh and Irish "
I'm pleased to see that they've altered description from English to British

The science is probably clearer then the language used .

I'm looking into the clans to see if there are distinctwo origins
Am told that my Macdermids descend from Camberlll of Cawdor
We  have Mcfarlane Kyle  Renfrew Mckay and stevenson Love Ramsey and Dunlop from as far back as I go. .

It would be interesting if people of ancestors with these names had DNA percentages defined as Scottish or GB /English "primarilyScottish "

I may have misquoted ancestry's definitions or theyve changed them again

my aunt was 55% Britain
33% Scotland Ireland Wales

when i open up eacl line the first is ENgland SCOTLANd Wales
with comment 'predominantly Scottish'

the next line opens with a green dot and Scotland

Im interested if anyone has had similar results  and if they do have an explanation whatever their family names
