James McConville
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 05:59 BST (UK) »
James McConville born in Cheshire c.1873 appears in the England, Wales & Scotland Censuses of 1901 and 1911 with his wife Edith (born around 1869). She appears at the christening of her son Willie, and the marriage of her daughter (Edith) to Anthony Robert Green in 1917. When I search for her marriage I cannot find it and the only names that appear with a James McConville marriage search are Catharine Hoban and Rose Killen. I cannot find Edith (or even 'E')as a middle name of either of these two. I am stumped.

Does anyone have any ideas how to progress?

When you say the names that appear with a James McConville marriage, I presume you mean the names that appear with the GRO entry. Have you looked for the other names in the next available census? Sometimes that helps to rule out the other name(s).
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

In the 1901 she is with her step children so she may have been Rooney when she married James.

Hi
From the 1901 census, do the family live in Altrincham, Cheshire

If yes, there are 2 step children shown surname Rooney

The GRO search engine gives the motheres surname Bebbington

A James McConville m,arried an Edith Rooney in Q3 1896 Chorlton, 8c, 1419

From the same census and tracing Edith b 1897 mother is also given as Bebbington

GRO search site is https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

Happy hunting

Thanks you all so much. I found the 1901 census with the step children. So simple yet I overlooked it. Then  I went searching for the marriage and you have already found it for me. You are all marvellous!

I'm new at this - so use the LDS site a lot. One more question - why do some searches bring up 'Latin' 'Italian' versions of some of the people I think I recognise.

Without knowing exactly what records you are looking at it is difficult to say but you are possibly looking at Catholic records  ;)  Some early parish registers also have names latinised.

That must be it. They were Catholic records. Thanks for explaining.
