Victorian/Edwardian homes
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 11:41 BST (UK) »
I am lucky to have a number of Victorian/Edwardian family photos but one thing has always struck me - all of these photos are studio based.

Did families back in the day have photos taken of them in their own homes & did the Victorians/Edwardians routinely take photos of their homes (externally & internally)?

I have often thought it would be great to see the interior of a family member's Victorian home.

Does anyone have these type of photos in their family albums?

Keith

Hi Keith

I have this lovely photo of my OH's Great Great Grandmother looking out of the window of her front room.  It was taken in 1909 on the day of her daughter's wedding.  Although it is a wedding day she appears to be wearing black, probably because she was still in mourning for her husband who died 10 months earlier.

The answer depends on when "back in the day" was in your view.
Early photography was mainly studio based with some outdoors but these were mainly of views or large groups.
The problem was lighting also cost.
As you come into the Edwardian era you get to see more indoor photography as the technology improved. In addition there were more people buying their own cameras. However the majority of photographs were still studio based as they provided better results.

I have a couple of Edwardian pictures, taken by a photographer I imagine, posed outside their houses, but no interiors. Members of my immediate family have had cameras since the early 1930s, but when I came to write about my childhood home I realised that no-one had ever taken a picture of the inside in all that time! I suppose it was a lighting problem. I do have pictures of family members posed outside it from about 1903 to 1972.

The vast majority of my ancestors homes appear to have been knocked down & re-developed so I envy you having pictures of the family home going back so far. I guess that ones like this are a rarity but I do find them interesting:-

I would love to see inside, I can't really make anything out apart from a few plants near the window.  At least her lace curtains look clean  ;D

The house is still standing. The brick walls have been rendered and painted, the ornate fence has gone, double glazed windows and door have been installed and a satellite dish has pride of place on the front.  It does still look neat and tidy but it has lost it's character.

No, the creeping ivy has gone too.  Here's a pic of how it looks now.

(I have had a few people comment on my avatar - David Jason lookalike  ;D)
