Carrick-on-Suir Ancestry
« on: Sunday 22 April 18 14:32 BST (UK) »
Hi :)

My mum's great grandfather was born in Tipperary and we are heading off to Ireland next month in search of family history.

I am pretty sure that I have found my gt gt grandfather's baptism and his parents' marriage:

Edward / Edmund Keefe son of Patrick & Catherine (Lahy / Leahy?) was baptised at Carrick on Suir, Waterford & Lismore, Tipperary, on 3 Jan 1849.

Patrick Keefe married Catherine Leahy at Carrick-on-Suir, Waterford and Lismore, Tipperary, on 28 December 1846.

Does anyone with local knowledge know where the church is where these services would have taken place, please?

Or does anyone else have a family connection? :)

Thank you.
Tricia :)

Looking at the baptism
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632158#page/80/mode/1up
it appears Pill Land is written on the same line as the priest's name so I think it refers to Edward's baptism.
I can't find any where called Pill Land but there is a Pill Road in Carrick on Suir and on the old maps there is a Pill House
http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,640708,622009,10,7
so your family likely lived in this area and used the nearest church.
Which would have been St.Nicholas

Just going to check the marriage now.

Despite the marriage being the last one before 1847 I think it was in November not December.

This time it's looks like Pill Ward, so again the same general area.

Pill Road today a little bit away from where Pill House was

Thank you very much Conahy. Much appreciated. :)
I'll have a good look at those.

We know of ancestors in Killarney and Cobh, as well as some in parts of Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and possibly Limerick so it will be great to experience the land of our forefathers.

Thanks again :)

http://archiseek.com/2011/church-carrick-on-suir/

Link  St Nicholas RC Church Carrick-on-Suir.
Commenced building this in 1879 "to replace an earlier church".
So I presume it's the earlier church your ancestors would have attended.

Hi Conahy Calling :)

Yes, I had noticed that, and wondered if the church was built on the same spot or nearby. Maybe I can find out. It will be interesting to visit the place, at least. Thank you. Much appreciated :)
