If the 1861 Paris marriage is the relevant one, I wonder whether “married with the consent of the Ambassador” implies that Walter worked for the British Embassy?

Added: maybe not - I see that this was the Embassy chapel, open to the British community in Paris, and all entries in the marriage register seem to have the consent of the Ambassador.

The potential “other” sighting in 1881 is as Mary B Johnstone, 20, married, born France (British subject) in service to a Cecelia Pollard in Westminster.

As regards the Paris marriage, FindMyPast have it indexed/ lumped together under 'British Armed Forces & Overseas Births & Baptisms', was he therefore in the forces, I wonder? Or are FindMyPast leading me up the garden path?!

No there is no indication he was in the forces - FindMyPast have simply lumped together the overseas events and the Armed Forces events in their category title.
