Sunderland Cemetery query
« on: Monday 23 April 18 09:42 BST (UK) »
I'm a bit lost

Durham Records online shows Thomas Snow was buried at Sunderland Cemetery(Stockton Road) 25 Aug 1942

Sunderland Ward transcripts shows him as (death 21 Aug 1942) buried at Sunderland Cemetery Ryhope Road Grangetown, Sunderland.
http://www.sunderlandward.co.uk/sunderland/suncems2.htm

The cemetery is also described as Sunderland, Grangetown on http://www.durham-images.org/

I'm sure they are the same place but what is the correct address and why the differences, it's confused me for a while as most of my maternal line are from the Sunderland area.

Thanks
Jenny

They are all one and the same cemetery,

If you look at old maps you'll see that if you follow Ryhope Road towards the centre of Sunderland it actually becomes Stockton Road.

I suspect that Ryhope Road, being at that time the main road south towards Stockton on Tees, was perhaps familiarly known as Stockton Road hence that became an alternative name for the cemetery.

It was also known as Grangetown because it was in the Grangetown district of Sunderland.

Thank you both.

JenB, Thank you, That is what I was after.  I did wonder whether Ryhope road turned into the Stockton Road at some point.

Thanks again.

When the cemetery opened in 1958 it was Ryhope Lane, and later Ryhope Road

Thank you Stan and sorry I missed your posts Jonw65, Sometimes real life gets in the way of being on rootschat (I have a brand new grandson, 3 weeks old and a poorly daughter).  I also didn't get email notifications of any replies.
