Murder in Edinburgh
« on: Monday 23 April 18 11:41 BST (UK) »
I have lost what information I had about a murder that took place, maybe in Leith are. I think the accused was a William Bain and the charge was for cutting someone's throat. This could have been in the 1920/30s. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Or would welcome suggestions on how to do an online research myself.

There is a case of murder (throat cutting) in Leith in 1923, however the accused was John Henry SAVAGE. The murdered woman was Wilhelmina NICHOLSON or GRIERSON.

Just found another one at Leith in 1928 - Isabella HAIN or WALES murdered with a wound to the throat by her husband Allan WALES. This sounds more like the one you're looking for? I can send you the newspaper report if you like.  ;)

Allan was found guilty of his wife's murder however the jury recommended leniency due to his young age (22), but he was sentenced to death. A petition for reprieve was rejected, and he was hanged on 13 Aug 1928 at Saughton Prison.

If maddys52 is correct and this is the case, Allan Wales, then you can view the case files held in National Records Scotland. If I remember correctly you have to go in person to view records, or get some kind person who is going to look for you. There are two entries for this case.

also mentioed in Execution referred to in Alex F Young 'The Encyclopaedia of Scottish Executions, 1750-1963', (1998), p.138.
