mary underdowne
« on: Monday 23 April 18 15:09 BST (UK) »
hi again

back with another query, i have in my tree a mary underdowne born 1598 died 1670, she married john tomlin in 1620, i have a record for that, not the original, but for her birth i only have her parents down as vincent underdowne born 1568 and phillis estice ( harries at marriage to vincent, was married to richard harries for 2 years) through what is known on ancestry as the "millennium file"i dont have an actual record

but now i ve found an excerpt from a book called dane court st peters, a kentish manor and its families, by peter j hills, i think written in 1977, here is an excerpt from it

stephen tomlins eldest son of john 1600 to 1651 of northdown and updown married mary underdowne, daughter of john underdowne of st laurence, by whom he had 6 sons and 5 daughters, all this fits in with my tree other than the fact that it says mary underdowne s father is called john not vincent

ihave found this online    http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gen/person/g25536.htm
here it says mary s dad was vincent ?? which is right and why can t i find any record or transcript of her birth

thanks all cathie

You are talking late 1500's, early 1600's.

There were no records of births. You are reliant on Parish Registers of baptisms.  Not all have survived from that era. And of those that have, many are illegible.

And certainly not all are online!

Where did John Tomlin marry Mary Underdowne and what was the exact date.  Where did the family live after the marriage

You seem to have got your info from the person who has the tree on the link you give - so why not contact them and ask ?

I see they have her baptism down as St Lawrence Thanet in 1598 - have you checked those Parish Registers to see if it is there as they say?

Banns would have been called in both parishes before the marriage  :)

To start the marriage by Licence in 1620, from Cowper,

Tomlyn, John, of S. Lawrence in Thanet, yeom., ba., about 20, under the govt. of John Sackett, who consents, as is testified by Vincent Underdowne, s. p., yeom., and Mary Underdowne, s. p., maiden, about 22, d. of Vincent Underdowne abovesaid, who is present and consents.  At S. M. Bredman's, Cant.  Nov. 2, 1620.

Earlier there is a baptism at St Lawrence as follows,

1598 Sep 15 Mary D of Vincent UNDERDOWNE

Prior to the baptism a marriage, again at St Lawrence, as follows,

1594/95 Feb 15 Vincent UNDERDOWNE Phillis HARVEY

Then earlier still another baptism, again at St Lawrence, as follows,

1568 Nov 1 Vincent S of Rychard UNDERDOWNE

Nothing found on Phyllis Harvey, as yet.

Hope this may be of help,
Tony
