Trimming Cottage Halifax
« on: Tuesday 24 April 18 09:02 BST (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to work out who Eliza Reid was.
I know that she was born in abt 1840 in Trimming Cottage Halifax and that Reid was her married name.
In 1915 she married John Askwith in Easingwold, North Yorkshire, they were both 75 years old and widowed and then they lived in Coxwold, North Yorkshire until their deaths. I know that in 1911 Eliza was a 'visitor' with John in Coxwold, his first wife died in 1905 and all three are buried together.
The 1911 census gives Eliza's POB as Trimming Cottage, Halifax but that's the only clue I have.
Does anyone recognise her please, or the cottage?
Thanks
Alison

Her father's name and occupation should be shown on the marriage certificate;  using those details you should be able to track back using census records.

Have you looked for her in 1901 as Eliza Reid born Halifax either married or widowed?

In 1881 there's an Eliza Reid 42 wife of William 59 from Coxwold a farmer/miller in the same area.

In 1871 William is a widower.   Possible marriage 1871 to Eliza Reid full age spinster father Thomas Metcalfe? Reid.  Writing isn't great  :-\

If correct that would mean Reid was also her birth name.

Since she was of "private means" that implies that she probably had some kind of inheritance from her family or first husband.

There is a probate calendar entry in 1888 for a Thomas Metcalfe Reid of Trimmingham Cottage, Skircoat in Halifax. Maybe have a dig around that family in the census to see if they are related.

Don't know if going up the right path but in 1871 Eliza is 32 unmarried at home with parents Thomas Metcalfe Reid and Martha plus unmarried siblings and a grandson.

Birthplace isn't right though - Burnley Road Skircoat.

That's a good clue - Trimmingham Cottage and probate mentions spinster daughter Hannah Maria who is on census as a sister to Eliza.

As one of her brothers has the middle name Cockcroft could this be birth for Eliza?

Eliza Reid Mar 1839 Halifax MMN Cockcroft

Hannah Maria Reid Mar 1843 Halifax MMN Cockcroft

Hannah Maria marries in 1890 to William Hutchinson Brown.
Residence for Hannah is Trimmingham Cottage.
