Hi Groom, I think the Thomas P Dorrington was b March qtr 1901 Hunslet mmn Thomason and in 1911 is an Inmate in Fulwood, Sheffield as Philip Dorrington b Leeds, and departed Liverpool for Quebec as Philip Thos DARRINGTON perhaps 1926?
These multiple threads so confuse me?!

Thanks for the replies.
Apologies, the first census I have him is the 1891 census - in Leeds  --  not 1881.

He states he was a widower when he married in 1885 but I have been unable to find his first marriage.
There was a John Dorrington in Ely? court for horse stealing. He is listed as John Dorrington - alias John Pearson - not sure if this is the right John Dorrington.

His daughter Andalusia went to the USA - became Andalusia Grimard - moved to Canada.
On one of the censuses she states her father to have been Welsh!

From 1891 I have found what became of all the family members - the problem I have is knowing nothing about the elusive John Dorrington before 1885.

(have posted in the past about him!)

John Dorrington - first 'sighting' in 1885 when he got married to Amy Thomason in Hitchin - said he was a widower and the son of John Dorrington ag lab.
 According to subsequent censuses he said he was born in Whittlesey Cambs in c1852 and worked as an iron planer.

Know all about him from 1885 on - his children - his death etc but before 1885 absolutely nothing.

Anyone help fill any gap between 1852 and 1885 -   many thanks - and apologies for requesting help about this guy yet again.

Just in case Susan was his Mother 1861 she is a servant in Limcolnshire born c 1837 St Giles, Cambridgeshire.

1851 she is a servant in Lincs also as Susan Dorington born c 1833 Tid St Giles, Cambridgeshire (sic)

She married Iley GRANT 18 Oct 1864 St Michael, Coningsby, Lincs
Her Father JOHN Dorrington a Labourer

2 Children to them;
BENJAMIN Bapt    04 Aug 1867
ROBERT Bapt 23 Apr 1869

1871 in Coningsby we have;
Susan Grant, 60, Head, Unm, born Conningsby
Susan Grant, 36, Sister, Widow, born Wisbech, Cambridgeshire
Robert Grant, 3, Sisters Son
Benjamin Grant, 2, Nephew

I think this should be Sister in Law.

ILEY Grant was buried 13 Jul 1870 age 65

1881 Benjamin is in the workhouse.

Susan GRANT was buried 28 Feb 1876 age 43 (1833)

1841 in Tydd St Giles we have;
John Darrington, 40, Ag Lab
Mary Darrington, 25
Henry Darrington, 13
SUSAN Darrington, 8
Mary Darrington, 5
Holland Darrington, 3

1851 Census
John Durrington   50
Mary Durrington   49
Mary Durrington   13
Henry Durrington 23
Holland Durrington 12
John Durrington   4, Son***
.
**This John appears to be reg 1846, no Mothers mn
(he appears to have died 1870 age 24

I can find Mary D*rrington (the Mother above) 1871 Census but not in 1861 to see if she has any Grandchildren with her.

Cant find Holland in 1861 either but all Census later he is there and married.

1871 Mary D she has a Granddaughter Mary Ann Durrington born 1863 Tydd St Giles, with her Cambridgeshire.
Possible 1862 Birth Reg has her as illegitimate also.

Trish :)
