Is this my Thomas TAYLOR, merchant seaman?
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 08:37 BST (UK) »
A family story says that Thomas TAYLOR, born 1835 Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, and his brother, William Taylor, born 1837 Burham Thorpe, joined the Merchant Navy and jumped ship when they arrived in Melbourne about 1852. I've already found eldest brother Francis, who jumped ship in Adelaide in 1855.

I've looked on Family Search and found a record for Thomas:

Name     Thomas Taylor
 Event Type     Military Service
 Event Year Range     1853-1857
 Event Place     United Kingdom
 Birthplace     Norfolk
 Birth Year     1835

Can SKS help with the details?

Many thanks :-)

There's a Thomas Taylor aged 21 from Burnham who was engaged as a seaman on the Prospero, London on 24 July  1856. No other information on the record.

Thanks so much, ShaunJ, that's fantastic! I've been looking for my great grandfather's arrival for years. Seems like the family story was true. Now to find which ship he arrived on ...

I've just checked Family Search again and found three other records that could be my great grandfather. I'd be grateful if SKS could let me know the names of the ships and the dates.

Two are indexed as:
Name     Thomas Taylor
 Event Type     Military Service
 Event Year Range     1853-1857
 Event Place     United Kingdom
 Birthplace     England
 Birth Year     1835

with references:

 Digital Folder Number  004620588
and
GS Film number  1483259
 Digital Folder Number  004620428

and one is indexed as:
Name     Thomas Taylor
 Event Type     Military Service
 Event Year Range     1845-1854
 Event Place     United Kingdom
 Birth Year     1834

with ref:

Many thanks :-)
