where to look next?
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 14:33 BST (UK) »
I am relatively sure about:
John Emmett  b 9 Jan 1748 Abbotskerswell m Mary Sheppard:  his father
Nicholas Emmett b 9 Aug 1719 Highweek  m Dorothy Addams: and his father
Roger Emmett b 27 Jan 1683 Highweek or Halberton m Judith Cummins

but I am stuck about his father:
Richard Emmett: and his father
Richard Emmett.
I can find births but no connecting data and I have looked extensively.

Does anyone have better ideas than me (no hard) or searching skills.  A prod in the right direction would be welcome

Hi
Richard Emmit married his wife Mary at Harberton 17.5.1673.
The vicar doesn't give the woman's maiden names.
Roger's birth in 1683 and their eldest child was born 1676 so that fits.
Richard  buried  13 Mar 1690

I can see a Richard s of Nicholas bapt 30.5.1647 at Harberton but not to Richard.
Siblings Ann 12.4.1646,Nicholas 1.2.1644
Nicholas married Agnes Hoare 31.3.1643 at Plymouth St Andrew

And that's were FindMyPast goes down.

Sorry

Hi again Ciderdrinker.
Now I am reallypuzzled.  I have been using Findmypast, like you, but I did not get that data and I should have.  What is that I keep doing wrong?  I'm asking myself and I don't have the answer.  However, I do appreciate your help.
As I said, I couldn't find connections for the Richards.  I wasn't happy with Richard's father as all I came up with was Richard born in Wembury 1660.  Nicholas as Richard's (b 1647 Halberton) father is much better.
Gets harder the earlier you go doen't
Bye and ta

Hi
Usually it's the spelling of the surname which is the problem.
But lately I've had things on FindMyPast where i find one child and then change the search to look for siblings and it brings up no results not even the one I've just found.
Maybe it was just playing up.
Any way happy to help.

Hi

Note that Halberton (near Tiverton) and Harberton (near Totnes) are two different places, both in Devon. You refer to Harberton, but the original post referred to Halberton. (I know the Harberton area quite well, but I can't help with the Emmit family.)
Cornish (Devon), Bowden (Cornwall, Devon), Kitson (Devon, not North Lancashire), Karslake (Devon), Eales (Devon), Churchill (Dorset -- no known connection with Sir Winston), Duncan (Ireland), Colclough (Ireland, not Staffordshire), McMurtry (Ireland), Browning (Hampshire, Dumfries), Heberden (various), Rogers (Thurlestone, Devon)

Sorry to have taken so long to reply.
Given that all the other towns referred to for the family are only a short distance away it seems most likely that HARBERTON is the correct place.
There seems to be so little information available within the record I am using that I am having trouble to establish with any certainty fathers and sons let alone place.  Abbotskerswell and Kighweek are the main locations.
