His number suggests he was a professional soldier & joined the Gordons 1909. He would have gone into 1 or 2 Batt. as there wasn't a 5th. at that time.
There's no reason to believe he was ever in the C. Highlanders.

Bad luck is what killed him. The were in reserve billeted at Wolfe huts Ovillers France. 190 Officers & men were coming out (probably a working party) when they were hit by a shell. 1 Officer & 2 OR's were killed one of them your man + 6 wouded.
I can't accurately place Wolfe huts yet as this was recently captured German territory taken during the Somme Offensive.

On this map,middle left is Albert. Follow the straight road going towards Pozieres & you will come to Ovillers-la-Boisselle. You will see a clutch of houses along the lane with a church. Wolfe huts were round about the blue line, probably on the lane at the back of the church. You can see the Germans had been pushed back to Grandecourt by the end of November so a shell hitting the huts from that distance was plain bad luck.

Ryan, I was on holiday when you first posted this so will try a restore later today.
The area on the map that Jim posted is a fascinating area to visit with many museums etc. When we used to visit France we stopped at campsites with our caravan in Amiens and Peronne many times, it was a good area to stop for a first night on our way down south as it was not too far from Calais.
