Tracing Callaghans
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 19:59 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to trace my 5th grt grandparents James and Catherine Callaghan.
At somepoint they go to England and in 1841 are living in Loughborough, Leicestershire.
James Callaghan is listed as born abt 1811 Ireland and wife Catherine is listed as born abt 1820 Ireland.
James Occupation is a Licensed Hawker.
They have the following children living with them.
Mary Ann Callaghan born abt 1823 Ireland
David Callaghan born 1835 Ireland
James Callaghan born 1838 Ireland
Celia Callaghan born 1840 Loughborough, Leic, England (My 4th grt grandmother)
living with them also is a David Callaghan born abt 1811 Ireland (James brother?)
There is a census in 1871 for a David Callaghan born abt 1820 (James brother or son?) He lists his birthplace as Lancashire.
Unfortunately James I think dies in 1843 and no other census records can be found on the family so I don't have a chance to pinpoint if they listed a more specific location in Ireland.
On Daughter Celia's GRO record her mothers maiden name is given as Hilmartin/Kilmartin?
Any help appreciated.

Mary Anne Callaghan is more likely his sister or other relative. Her age is too close.
James is 12 years her senior and Catherine is only 3 years older
Be aware that the surname Callaghan may begin with O' in some Irish records.

In later census records Catherine birth date changes to 1810 and her birthdate on her burial record says abt 1815, So Mary Ann could possibly be a daughter if Catherine was born around 1810.

Think I may have had a break through although not sure but I think I’ve found baptisms for children David and Mary Ann.

David Callaghan bapt 1833 Boyle, Co.Roscommon, Ireland. Parents James Callaghan and Catherine (surname is left blank) what crucial and might link to what Celia writes on her marriage record for fathers occupation. And David’s bapt father James is listed as REVENUE POLICE.

And I have Mary Ann bapt 1832 Boyle, Co.Roscommon, Ireland. Parents James and Catherine (Surnane blank again) James is listed as REVENUE POLICE again.
Mary is listed as born abt 1832 on 1841 census, I've accidentally wrote 1823 above.

I wonder if this is what Celia meant by her father being a ‘policeman’.

There are no other bapts in Roscommon for these two after 1833 so it looks promising to them coming to England although I still need to find James born around 1838 baptism.
But David and Mary Anns baptism are around the right ages and occupation fits.
I wonder if when coming to England the only work James could get was hawking, and Celia wrote policeman as that’s what his job was in Ireland and it sounds and looks better than hawker.

Mary Anne is 8yrs old in 1841 - born about 1833. Fenb0y made a mistake in post 1.

Thank you Heywood, I realised that last night  ;D
It seems 1841 also puts Catherines age out as well as later census gives it as abt 1810 and burial gives as 1815.
James burial gives him a birthdate of abt 1808.

Just received Catherine’s marriage cert to Michael.
It seems she lists her father as ‘John Martin, Farmer’?
I assume Kilmartin and Martin are interchangeable?
