Prospect Place cemetery Toronto.
« on: Wednesday 25 April 18 20:13 BST (UK) »
Hi

We have been looking at local lads who served in WW1 and have one who has flown the nest and gone to Canada.
Sidney Thomas Lickorish b 1898 Gayton Northants.
Joined up whilst living in Simpson Buckinghamshire to Northamptonshire regiment.
He travelled to Quebec in 1922 heading to work in Markham  Toronto as a farm labourer.
Sidney died 7th April 1926 and was buried in a veterans grave on 10th April.
His death cert ......if we have the right man.....has father as William but he was Thomas. Cause given as bronchial pneumonia.

My question is....if he is buried in a veterans grave does he has a headstone? As in a CWGC one.

Thanks Tazzie

He is on findagrave as S Lickorice.  Here is his headstone.  That is what his headstone says.  Pte West Hants Regt

Here is the grave number etc...  Last name is Lickorise here.

You could contact the cemetery to ask about the grave.   You will probably need this information above.

What an interesting name, Lickorish.

About the William...

The cemetery record doesn't seem to say William is his father, just that a William Lickorish owned the plot. There is a William Lickorish living in Markham (just outside Toronto) with his family in the 1921 census and I wonder if he is another relative. Looks like he came over to Canada in 1911.

William 53 arrived 1911
Sarah his wife 53 arrived 1911
Bertram son 26 arrived 1911
Elizabeth daughter-in-law 25 arrived 1919
Bettina granddaughter 2 arrived 1919
All born England
Plus Mabryn granddaughter 9 mos. born Ontario.

I think this is the obituary for that William Lickorish...living just north of Toronto, wife Sarah, son Bert.

He died in Stouffville in 1938... he was from Yorkshire.

I haven't done a thorough search of the British records but a quick look leads to the suggestion that William might be the brother of Sidney's father which would make him Sidney's uncle.

Hello both....

Seems you have solved it. Yes William was Sidney's uncle. He was born in Seaforth Lancashire however not Yorkshire. In 1881 William & Thomas are with father William a shepherd in Northamptonshire.
A mistake has happened on the grave. There was not a West Hants regiment. Sidney Thomas was in the Northants regiment so possible mis heard or recorded.
Sidney suffered with ill health during WW1 and was hospitalized several times. On May 27 th 1918 he was declared missing in action he was repatriated Dec 7th 1918 and placed in the reserves.
He is recorded on the roll of honour at St Thomas  Simpson in Buckinghamshire near where I live.
Over the last 4 years my family has been compiling the history behind the names who served their country.
We have completed many villages now swallowed within the boundary of Milton Keynes. Their names live on and we will remember them....everyone.

Many thanks another story to write up now.

Pleased to have been able to help  :).

As an aside.....

I was wondering if you were aware that Sidney's cousin Bertram returned to England in late 1914 and also joined the Northamptonshire Regt?

Hi Polarbear.

Yes I've only looked at him today.
It's a great name Lickorish in various spellings.

We started this project as my eldest is history mad. He won a place to visit France and Flanders on 2014  to mark the centenary.

It's grown like topsy since.......but its fascinating

Thanks again Tazzie
