William Cartwright, born 1865
« on: Thursday 26 April 18 12:16 BST (UK) »
Hello,

William Cartwright was born in or around 1865. On both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses in Wigston, Leicestershire, he gives his place of birth as Newark, Nottinghamshire. I have never found a marriage record of him and Ellen Dobson, so I cannot confirm his father. But I have always tended to believe that he is the same William Cartwright, son of Samuel and Jessie Cartwright in nearby Norwell.

Can anyone find any baptisms or records in Newark that might suggest that he was indeed from there? My presumption is that the enumerator may not have heard of Norwell when taking the census so took the nearest town instead. I have found this for relatives in Hampshire before (with less common names) who have been given a birthplace of the nearest town.

I'd appreciate any information,

Adam

There is an 1891 census entry in Louth Lincolnshire for a William Cartwright born Norwell in 1865. Looks like this might not be your one.

Damn. Well that clears that up. Thanks. So he must've been born in Newark presumably.

I've already discounted William Frederick. He was a cousin of William Cartwright and both men are elsewhere in 1891. The 1863 birth looks unlikely.

The FHS CD has baptisms for 7 children called William Cartwright between 1862 - 1866.

One of these was illegitimate, born in Retford. Of the others, there were 2 in Norwell (including the one mentioned above), 2 in Upton, 1 in Bothamstall, 1 in Flintham.

If you want any more details of any of these, let me know.

Added - it looks as though the Upton babies both died young.
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)

I can't see any Cartwright/Lambert marriages.

Possible fits for the other 2:

1841 11 29 William CARTWRIGHT     and Elizabeth BAKER        NEWARK St Mary Magdalene
1864 10 27  Samuel  CARTWRIGHT and  Jessie PEARCE       NORWELL St Lawrence
