census address ?
« on: Friday 27 April 18 16:46 BST (UK) »
Hello , I have a couple of postcards that one of my great great aunts sent when she was in service in the early 1900's I think , I know at one time she was a domestic servant to Lord and Lady Montagu , the address on her card says 67 Holland Park . I wondered if there was a method that could get me to see the people living at that address in maybe 1901 and 1911 ?
Regards
Alan

If you look at the 1911 link there is an Alice Prout (45, servant) in the Montagu household. Could she be a relative of Sarah Prout?

Thanks , I think that is her , maybe she used a middle name , most of mine did . She was born in Chittlehampton and moved to South Molton later . I will check though , I know her sister Elizabeth went up to London too but think she was older .

On the 1911 Alice's birthplace is recorded as South Molton.

People in service were very often given names by their employers. Therefore Alice could be Sarah providing the birth year is the same.

Thanks , the birth year is 5 yrs out , she was born in 1860 but have just noticed her on 1881 census up in London aged 21 calling herself Sarah A Prout , her name in fact was Sarah Courteney Prout , perhaps she liked Alice better , I find a great difference in quoted ages on census's and have to make allowances .
